So my brother wrote this poem when he was six years old or something. It’s very sad and I think it’s the best poem ever and I think it sums up the end of this year’s MACROCK. Obviously, it is not about MACROCK. It’s actually about Christmas but you’ll get the gist when you read it.

So, here’s the best poem in the entire world, which was written by my brother Jason some time between 1989 and 1992. (Hey, Jason, sorry if you get mad at me for doing this, but your art needs to be shared.) :

It’s too early for me to think of a witty introduction, but, luckily, Larkin Arts’ excellence speaks for itself.

Located in the Denton building on Court Square, Larkin Arts houses a gallery, a school, studio spaces, and an art supply store. Yep. All four. In one space. Oh, and it’s beautiful. But that’s not really what this is about. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Unless it’s Larkin Arts because then you’d be judging it appropriately… I digress…

One thing I personally love about Larkin is their 6 x 6 juried shows that feature really awesome local artists. And guess what, Internet? There’s one happening TONIGHT from 5 to 8 p.m.! So take a tiny break from rockin’ out, come to the opening, and see John Hostetter perfrom from 6:30 to 7:30!

Also during this lovely MACROCK weekend (it starts today!!! AHHHH!!), Larkin will be hosting an ART MARKET! It’s gonna happen on Saturday between noon and 6 p.m.! The market will feature work from a dozen artists, ranging from paintings and prints to other arts and crafts. So swing by on your way either to or from the Label Expo and buy some cool stuff!

Another aspect of Larkin Arts that’s super cool is that they offer art classes for humans ages 4 to 400! Just kidding, nobody lives to be 400. So scoot on over to their site to check them out.

Seriously, though, the Valley is home to some incredibly talented artists, and the owners and operators of Larkin Arts are definitely among them. Their yearn to bring the artists of the Valley closer to the people has made for one incredible, inviting, and really emotionally affecting space. The owners are warm and friendly, the atmosphere is unpretentious, and everything in there really shines. So come check it out and see what art in Harrisonburg is all about!

Akron/Family has always been a solid choice. They’ve been a part of the music world for quite awhile and always deliver. I know that they first landed in my iTunes probably as early as 7th grade and have stayed there well listened to ever since.

GET DRUNK AND THEN GET FULL: JACK BROWN'S AND BILLY JACK'S

Ohhh Jack Brown’s and Billy Jack’s, you are the reasons for my ten-pound weight-gain over this past year.

Seriously, I don’t know how they do it, but these sister bars both boast the most delicious, decadent, diet-crushing menus in Harrisonburg.

While both businesses focus on beer (they both have so much beer I’m not even going to try to list it), they differ in the eats they offer. Jack Brown’s is a no-frills burger joint. Seriously, I don’t even think they have ketchup. That might not be true. Actually, that’s probably a complete lie. I’m sure they have ketchup. But they definitely don’t have lettuce and tomato. You know what they do have? Daily burger specials. And they are so weird and so delicious. How special can a burger get, you ask? OH I WILL TELL YOU:

The Greg Brady: mac and cheese and bbq chips. It’s everyone’s favorite. It’ll probably give you a heart attack but who cares?
The Showalter (I think this still exists but I’m not sure): bacon, egg, and cheese on donuts. Donuts.
The Elvis: peanut butter, mayo, bacon, cheese. Hey, it’s what the King would have wanted.

Unfortunately for you, Jack Brown’s only offers one of these specials a day, so you’ll just have to wait and see what you can get. I know Fridays are Greg Brady days and Saturdays are freestyle days, meaning they’re gonna put whatever-the-hell they want on a burger and you will eat it and you will like it. Oh also, they have fried Oreos. Yep. Yeeeeeeeep.

If you’re not a fan of red meat, head on over to Billy Jack’s. They’re located on the same block, after all, between Water St. and Court Square. And ooohhhh Billy Jack’s is so good. I must confess that I’m a chicken nugget addict. I don’t know why or how it happened, but I am. And Billy Jack’s has the. best. chicken nuggets. My personal menu favorites are as follows…

Chipotle-lime Sticky Nugs: served in a chinese take-out box with blue cheese or ranch dressing
Sweet Chili Sticky Nugs: see above.
Chicken & Waffles: I mean yeah.
Jalapeno-chili-cheese fries: with ranch. Raaanch.
The Muddy Pig: a homemade donut with Nutella and bacon. MMMHMM.

Billy Jack’s has a number of wing and donut options, too. And LOTS of beer on draft. So come check these businesses out when you’re in town! They’re both open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends.

A not-so hidden gem of Downtown Harrisonburg, the Indian American Cafe serves up the best Nepali style food around. You can customize your meals hotness level from 1/2 (Mild) to 5 (SPICY!). No joke, some of the greatest food that you will ever taste! The restaurant is super friendly (kid-friendly too), and open Monday - Saturday 11:00-2:30 and 5:00-9:00pm and closed Sunday. Be sure to stop by while you are in Harrisonburg, you won’t regret it.

Check out the Ponir Saag (cheese cubes with spinach and a bunch of other Nepali spices) and the lamb curry. Y U M .

From another world... Sigur Ros

Over the last couple of days I’ve been seeing posts on my Facebook news feed of a bunch of people who will be experiencing (yes, that’s the correct word to use) Sigur Ros tomorrow at the Patriot Center in D.C.

This particular committee member, will also be participating in this other worldly experience and thinks if you haven’t ever had the chance, you should. This ambient, celestial, well-respected band has proven to be quite the forceful, foursome since they first made the journey from Iceland to the U.S. They have explored music in ways that not many have and produced some of the most moving and emotional (in my opinion) music of its kind.

Clementine's Friday Headliner: Cheap Time

GET TO KNOW YOUR VENUES: The Little Grill Collective

This little eclectic restaurant is a staple of the Harrisonburg community. Even though it’s small, it boasts a variety of food and entertainment that you can’t ever really go wrong with.

It has a Mexi night, Indian night, and a “Down Home” or southern cooking night. The menu is geared to vegan’s and vegetarians with their specialties of “groovy” gravy and soysauge but they still offer meat options including a grass fed hamburger and a local free range chicken burrito.

But, I bet if you stopped anyone on the street to ask where to get the best breakfast, they will point you towards the Little Grill. Their Blue Monkey Pancakes (fluffy batter filled with blueberries and bananas), breakfast burrito, or any choice of their omelets will leave you completely and utterly satisfied and ready to start your day. (Literally, I could go on and on about the breakfast menu at this place.)

MACROCK loves having them as a venue because they are always super supportive of us as well as, the entire community. This restaurant leaves your tummy happy along with your conscious because you know that you’re giving to a collective that’s constantly giving back to the community.

So luckily if you’re trying to see Modern Hut or Waxahatchee this year at MACROCK you’ll be spending some time at the Little Grill. If not, I would find an excuse to get their breakfast the morning after MACROCK… it will be the best completion to your weekend.

GET TO KNOW YOUR VENUES: Court Square Theater

Located at the end of Court Square - right next to the Artful Dodger - is Court Square Theater (completely different from Court Square Music). It’s one of Harrisonburg’s TWO movie theaters, but it’s not a movie theater all the time. Court Square Theater specializes in the performing arts. You want plays? They got ‘em. You want shows? Check. You want indie films? LOOK NO FURTHER.

Court Square Theater is also home to the Super Gr8 Film Festival, which happens annually in November. Basically, a bunch of artists go out and film a little movie on a Super 8 camera and aren’t allowed to see it before it’s shown to the public. It’s super cool.

You know how being able to eat some weird 12-course meal and drink a super-expensive-yet-crappy bottle of wine while watching a movie is really trendy right now? Well Court Square Theater does not offer that, because that is stupid. THEY DO HAVE ALCOHOL, THOUGH. And POPCORN and CANDY. Yum!!

A N Y W A Y … It’s an adorable little theater and it’s always the host to our folky and softer showcases. This year On an On, Holopaw, Julianna Barwick, Timbre, and Cat Martino will be gracing the stage. Talk about an angelic and talented lady fest!

So come out and take a break from standing to watch some of our loveliest and whimsical acts.
